CD138, also known as SDC1 and Syndecan-1, is the most studied member of the Syndecan family. It is found mainly in epithelial cells, but its expression is regulated during embryonic development. Syndecan-1 / SDC1 / CD138 has been shown to mediate cell adhesion to various ECM molecules and to act as a nuclear receptor for fibroblast Growth Factor proteins. The fibroblast Growth Factor proteins is also related to differentiation and can be an angiogenic Growth Factor proteins. During the malignant transformation of several epithelial cells, the expression of Syndecan-1 / SDC1 / CD138 decreases, this loss is related to the histological differentiation of sm daughter cell carcinoma caused by poorly differentiated tumors. In head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, positive self-expression 1 is associated with a more favorable prognosis. Experimental studies on the role of Syndecan-1 in malignant transformation indicate that the expression of Syndecan-1 / SDC1 / CD138 is related to the preservation of epithelial morphology, anchorage-dependent growth and prevention of in vitro invasion.
